On 14 August, I had the honour of attending the 2026 Victory in the Pacific Commemoration Service at Cabramatta. Victory in the Pacific Day marks Japan's acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on 15 August 1945, bringing the Second World War to an end for Australia. After almost six years of war, Australians could finally celebrate peace, while remembering the enormous sacrifice made by those who served and the many who never returned home. More than 80 years later, it remains important that we continue to tell their stories and honour their service. Since 2005, the Victory in the Pacific Committee has kept this tradition alive in our local community, bringing veterans, families and residents together each year for the march and commemorative service at Cabravale Memorial Park. I sincerely thank Major Walter Robinson OAM and everyone on the Victory in the Pacific Committee for their continued dedication to this important commemoration. Lest we forget.
