I pay tribute to a valued member of our community and the Australian Labor Party, Peter Brennan, who passed away on 23 March. Born in the United Kingdom, Peter was a mechanical fitter and a British Army veteran who served in West Germany. He later moved to South Africa with his wife, Rosemary, and their two sons, working for several companies during apartheid and advocating for the fair treatment of non-white South Africans. In 1986 he emigrated to Sydney, Australia, where he worked for Visy paper and UGL Rail Services, where he contributed significantly to the maintenance and safety of Sydney's trains. Known for his versatility and calmness under pressure, Peter notably managed a major gas leak incident at the Auburn rail facility. An active union delegate and later treasurer for the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, as well as a dedicated member of the Labor Party, Peter was a respected figure in our community. He will always be remembered as a migrant success story who made meaningful contributions to his workplace, the labour movement and the south‑western Sydney community.
