Last night I had the privilege and great pleasure of attending the welcoming of His Holiness Mar Gewargis III Younan, the 110th Patriarch of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East. The event, held at St Zaia Cathedral in Middleton Grange, in my electorate, was attended by hundreds, including senior members of clergy, community leaders and local parishioners. His Holiness embodies the church's rich history and deep spirituality, which has withstood the test of time and persevered through many challenges and adversities. I echo words on the night: This is more than a visit; it is a pilgrimage. This is his Holiness's first patriarchal journey to Australia and reflects the strength of the local church community, a testament to our multicultural nation—the community thrives locally—free from persecution and political interference. I thank Mr Khamiss Khamiss, the president of St Zaia Cathedral's committee, and his hardworking team for making this event one the community will not soon forget. I also extend my best wishes to his Holiness during his stay in our great State.
