Serbian Easter Community Dance

28 May 2025

On the 2nd of May, I had the privilege of joining the Serbian community at Bonnyrigg Sports Club for their annual Easter Dance—a vibrant celebration of Orthodox Easter and a proud expression of culture, faith, and togetherness. For many in the Serbian community, Orthodox Easter is a deeply spiritual time marked by family gatherings, traditional foods, church services, and the symbolic cracking of eggs. A unique part of the tradition is the colouring of eggs using natural dyes—most commonly onion peels—alongside flowers and leaves pressed onto the shells and wrapped in stockings to create beautiful, intricate patterns. What made this event truly special was its openness—an opportunity to share these cherished customs not just within families, but with the wider community. In a place as diverse as ours, gatherings like this remind us of the power of cultural exchange. Thank you to the Serbian community for your warmth, generosity, and for keeping tradition alive in such a joyful and inclusive way.
