On 5 October 2024 I had the pleasure of attending the ancestral ceremony organised by the Khmer Krom and Australian Buddhist Association of NSW at the Khmer Buddhist Temple in Rossmore. Known as Bun Pchum Ben and Bun Daunta in Khmer, the ceremony is a cherished tradition honouring deceased ancestors. It is part of a broader cultural celebration that spans several days and is typically observed by Cambodian Buddhists in September or October to mark the end of Buddhist Lent. The event began with the graceful robam choun por, a traditional Khmer blessing dance, where dancers offer blessings of good fortune, peace and prosperity through delicate hand gestures and movements. It is always a privilege to join such a warm and welcoming community, sharing in their treasured traditions, listening to their stories and witnessing the deep respect they have for their heritage.
