Oxi Day

13 February 2025

OXI Day, celebrated annually on October 28, marks Greece's powerful defiance against fascism in 1940, when Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas declared a resounding 'Oxi" or "No" in English to Mussolini's demands, propelling Greece into World War II on the side of the Allies. The Macarthur Greek community honoured this momentous day with the inaugural Greek Festival at Campbelltown Showground. Over 300 attendees enjoyed live bouzouki performances by the internationally acclaimed Tommy Tsonis, captivating traditional Greek dances by the renowned Sydney Szimos dancers, and authentic Greek cuisine from local food stalls, including delicious souvlaki wraps. This event wasn't just a celebration of history; it was a tribute to the vibrancy and unity of our Greek-Australian community, showcasing the continuing legacy and contributions of Greek culture within our multicultural society. I'm proud to stand with the Macarthur Greek community, celebrating both the resilience of Greece's past and the strength it brings to our community today.
