Operation Storm

15 September 2026

5 August marked the anniversary of Operation Storm in 1995, a military offensive that displaced more than 200,000 ethnic Serbs. Many Serbian Australians came to this country after being forced to flee their homes, leaving behind their communities, possessions and loved ones. Each year, we remember those who lost their lives, those who remain missing, and the families whose lives were changed forever. Today, I acknowledge the Serbian members of my community who gathered to honour their loved ones and reflect on this tragic chapter in their history. More than three decades later, the impact of these events is still felt across generations. Remembering this humanitarian tragedy is not about division, it is about recognising the suffering of innocent people and reaffirming our shared commitment to peace, justice and human dignity. Australia became a place of refuge for many who were displaced, and our community is stronger because of the resilience, contribution and enduring spirit of Serbian Australians. Today, we honour those who were lost and stand with all those who continue to carry the pain of displacement.
