Operation Storm, conducted from 4–7 August 1995, was a major military offensive that led to the displacement of over 200,000 ethnic Serbs. Entire communities were uprooted, homes destroyed, and countless lives lost, many still unaccounted for, and those who survived were forever changed. Many Serbian people came to Australia as a direct result of Operation Storm, having fled with little more than what they could carry. As this anniversary is marked, I acknowledge the Serbian members of my community who are reflecting on this solemn occasion, honouring those they lost and remembering all they left behind. This was not just a military operation, it was a humanitarian crisis with consequences that still echo today. Acknowledging that pain is not political; it is an act of humanity. We must never forget what happened, and we must continue to support those who carry the scars. Australia gave refuge and our community is stronger for the presence of those who endured and rebuilt. The resilience of the Serbian people, their determination to rebuild, and their commitment to preserving culture and family in a new land are a testament to enduring strength.
