In mid to late August, I had the pleasure of celebrating multiple Onam festivals with the community. I will speak about two in particular. One was with the World Malayalee Council and the other with the Edmondson Park Malayalee Club in Sydney. It was an honour to join them over the course of this week for one of the great festivals of southern India that celebrates a number of fantastic traditions. My favourite is the return of King Mahabali, who returns once a year to greet his followers. A member of the community dresses up as King Mahabali and there is a lot of celebration, food and dance, and a great time is had by all. I congratulate those two organisations in particular for all their hard work, and the sponsors for making those festivals very successful.
