Norma Smith

12 May 2026

Norma Alice Mary Smith recently celebrated the extraordinary milestone of turning 100. A moment that reflects not just a long life, but one defined by generosity, resilience, and a deep care for others. She began her working life as a talented seamstress assisting with dressmaking for Woolworths before becoming a weaver at Xcel in Redfern, helping produce fabric for soldiers' uniforms. In 1949, she worked at the tuck shop at St Marys Catholic School, where her connection with the Sisters of Charity first took root. Over many years, she gave tirelessly to local organisations, including serving as Treasurer of the Catholic Women's League Liverpool and the Liverpool Historical Society, and supporting the Busby Hospital Auxiliary. Through her sewing and knitting, she helped raise vital funds for equipment at Liverpool Hospital. Awarded the Order of Liverpool in 1992, Norma's life reflects a remarkable legacy of care. Although I was unable to attend her birthday celebration, I warmly congratulate her on this significant and inspiring milestone.
