Khmer New Year

15 May 2025

On 20 April I had the immense honour of joining the recently re-elected Federal member for Werriwa, Anne Stanley, at Khmer New Year celebrations at the Rossmore Khmer Buddhist Temple. It was a truly special gathering that brought together tradition, culture and community. Choul Chnam Thmey is more than just the start of a new calendar year; it is a time of renewal and reflection, deeply rooted in the rhythms of the seasons and the spirit of Cambodian heritage. From the sacred water blessings to the joyful music, dance and offerings to monks, every part of the celebration was a testament to the richness of Khmer culture. What moved me most was the sense of unity, with families, elders and young people coming together to share in food, laughter and tradition. Seeing younger generations proudly take part reminds us that culture is alive and well in Leppington, being carried forward in community, not just memory. The event truly showcased the beauty of Cambodian Australian identity, and I thank all who made it possible.
