It was wonderful to attend the International Everest Day celebration on 30 May, organised by the Federation of Nepalese Community Associations with the support of Nepalese community organisations across New South Wales. Observed around the world each year, International Everest Day commemorates the historic achievement of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary, who first reached the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. The event also highlighted the importance of protecting the Himalayan region and raising awareness of climate change through the theme, "Melting Ice, Rising Responsibility." The program brought the community together through an awareness walk, cultural performances, traditional Nepalese food, family activities and a wonderful display of children's artwork celebrating Everest and the environment. I was pleased to purchase one of the artworks, which now proudly hangs in my office. I thank everyone who attended and acknowledge the efforts of the organisers, Mr Sanjeev Sharma from the Consulate of Nepal, and Dr Madhu Pudasaini, Chair and President of FeNCAA, for making the event such a success.
