First Test Flight - Western Sydney International Airport

14 November 2024

Is it a bird? Is it superman? No, it is the first test flight in and out of the Western Sydney international airport. In early October residents of south-west Sydney witnessed the first plane take off and land at our new airport. The Piper PA-30 Twin Engine Comanche was tasked with taking off and landing at both ends of the runway in daylight, dusk and night-time conditions to ensure that the airport's 3,000 aeronautical ground lights, or AGLs, were fit for purpose ahead of the 2026 opening. Construction began on the airport's single initial runway in 2022 and is nearing practical completion. The runway is expected to be capable of catering for around 10 million passengers per year from day one. The milestone comes after another in July, with the completion of the terminal's roof. At 80 per cent completion, with internal works proceeding, the new international airport is certainly taking shape and the people of Leppington are very excited. I look forward to the opening and thank the thousands of local workers who have brought the airport to life each and every day.
