Chaldean Babylonian New Year Festival

13 May 2026

I recently attended the 7326th Akitu Festival in Wetherill Park on the 22nd of March, marking the Chaldean Babylonian New Year. I would like to thank the Chaldean League and its president, Sam Yousif, for both their invitation and coordination of the event, celebrating one of the world's oldest communities. Embracing Christianity in the first century A.D., this resilient community represents persistence, faith and family despite centuries of persecution and displacement. Today, the Chaldean community continues to make a significant contribution to Australia's social, cultural and economic life, particularly here in Western Sydney where strong family values, education and community service remain central to community life. Hosted by Laith Alcino, the event recognised the remarkable achievements of HSC and tertiary graduates. It was inspiring to see a community with a history spanning multiple millennia continue its tradition of academic excellence and contributions foundational to early human history, including architecture, law, mathematics and astronomy. I congratulate the Chaldean League on its important work.
