On 6 April, I had the honour of attending the 7325th Akitu Festival—also known as the Chaldean Babylonian New Year—in Edensor Park. This vibrant celebration was not only a tribute to thousands of years of history and culture, but also a moment to recognise the academic achievements of outstanding HSC and university graduates within the community. The Chaldean people, with roots in ancient Babylon and Mesopotamia, carry a proud legacy of contributions to civilisation—excelling in fields like architecture, law, astronomy, and the arts. Despite enduring displacement and persecution, the Chaldean community remains strong, united by a shared commitment to preserving its identity and traditions. Led by the Chaldean League, this festival is a powerful reminder of resilience, renewal, and cultural pride. It was inspiring to see the next generation honoured alongside a celebration of heritage that spans millennia. Events like this shine a light on the enduring spirit of communities who continue to enrich Australia.
