I had the pleasure of attending the Assyrian New Year Festival at Fairfield Showground on 24 March. The event, organised by the Assyrian National Council - Australia and the Young Assyrians, was a vibrant celebration that draws together Assyrians and others from various cultural and religious backgrounds from all over Sydney. The event included live music from Assyrian artists, dance, food stalls, variety booths, games and fun rides for the kids. Stalls showcased clothing, jewellery, and art and artefacts that highlight Assyrian history and heritage, which stretches back millennia. Assyrian youth groups performed a dramatic depiction of ancient New Year celebrations, and the events carried on well into the night, with families enjoying music, dancing and some amazing fireworks.
