NATHAN HAGARTY MP RESIGNS FROM LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL

13 December 2023

It has been an honour to serve on Liverpool City Council for the last seven years.

To date, I have successfully represented this community as a Councillor and the Member for Leppington. However, I was recently appointed the Government Whip in the Legislative Assembly. Due to these additional commitments and responsibilities, I have made the tough decision to resign as a Councillor.

With only nine months until next years’ local government elections, it is my strong expectation that Liverpool follow the lead of all other councils across NSW and leave the position vacant for the remainder of the term. It would cause unnecessary cost and inconvenience to local residents and ratepayers to hold a by-election.

Local government works best when we pursue the interests of the community above all else. When that doesn’t occur, Mayors, Councillors and councils find themselves in the media for all the wrong reasons.

As a Councillor, the most satisfying times were when the system worked – a resident saw a problem, picked up the phone, and the issue was sorted. However, it is during the toughest of times that we have seen the best of our community. I was particularly proud to have stood up, spoke out and played my part as we dealt with the grave impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our region.

I especially want to thank the hardworking staff at Liverpool City Council, both past and present. I also thank my fellow Councillors for their contributions over the years. It has been a privilege to serve the community alongside you.
